KNOCK DOWN, DRAG OUT

SYNOPSIS:

Developers want to tear down Antoine’s, Boston’s only drag bar, in order to build some high-rise condos. Zonna, who has been performing at the club for 2/3 of her life, has other ideas. After being visited by the ghost of her drag mother Crystal Crawford, Zonna bands together with her drag queen sisters Ivanka (the club’s 70 year old bartender and former chanteuse), Mx (a gender fluid college kid) and Sharia Law (a hardscrabble queen who has fought for everything she’s got) and stages a “drag in”, where they will live in the club to protest its demolition, while fending off their neighbor, Mrs. Chao (an 80 year old Chinese woman who is on a permanent neighborhood watch), as well as the gentrification of the neighborhood they all love.

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING:

  • Zonna, 50ish (ages flexible) African American: Zonna has been a drag performer for 30+ years. She’s the glue that holds the club and the other girls together. Strong, likable, smart. Can be played by: Age: 40s, 50s, Race/Ethnicity: Black, African, Caribbean, or African American Gender: Male, Non-binary
  •  Crystal Crawford, 40s-50s: (ages flexible) Crystal Crawford is a legend and she knows it. She is Zonna’s drag mother and brought her into this life. Crystal disappeared mysteriously years before and appears only as a spectre to Zonna. She is glamourous to a fault, in a very 1990s way. Can be played by: Age: 30s, 40s, 50s, Race/Ethnicity: Any race/ethnicity but preferably African American, Gender: Male, Non-binary
    • Tasha, (40s+ Must be able to play late 60’s-70), Any race (but likely African American / Black), Female: Tasha is Zonna’s mother. They have no spoken since Zonna was kicked out of the house. There is no love lost between the two. Fierce, sharp, wounded. Can be played by: Age: 60s, 70s+, Race/Ethnicity: Black, African, Caribbean, or African American, Latinx/o/a or Hispanic,

NOTE: Crystal Crawford and Tasha will be played by the same actor

COMPENSATION: 

Rehearsal: $15/hour for up to 20 hours

Performance; $15/hour, including run time of show plus one hour

Paid in full at the end of the festival
